
Carpenter- Stoodley Funeral Home located in Belleville, NY has operated in Southern Jefferson County since April
1861 and was started by John Carpenter, cabinet maker and undertaker. Business was handed down to his son William
Carpenter, then to his son-in-law Ross C. Stoodley. The business was incorporated in 1971 to include Ross' son
Clark W. Stoodley Sr.
In January 2000 Carpenter-Stoodley funeral home business merged with Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State
Street, Watertown which is owned by C.William Jr. and Teresa Stoodley. Clark W. Sr. will remain as manager of
Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral home Belleville. C. William Jr. is the 5th generation of funeral directors in his
family. He went to work for Reed & Benoit Funeral Home in April 1979, and he and Teresa purchased the business
from Herbert & Jennie Mae Benoit in April 1989.
The merger of the two business of Reed & Benoit and Carpenter-Stoodley funeral homes allows an expanded area of
service with the two locations with a current staff of four licensed funeral directors too insure 24 hours, 7
days a week availability.
The funeral home was established by Mr. Carpenter's father, John H. Carpenter, in the 1860s on Main Street in
Belleville. The business was later moved to its present Main Street Location in 1952.
Mr. Stoodley became sole owner of the business following the death of Mr. Carpenter Aug. 11, 1960, at the age of 90.
Mr. Stoodley remained sole owner of the funeral home until 1970, when he and his son formed Carpenter-Stoodley
Funeral Home Inc.

Traveling from the North: Route 81 South - take exit 41, turn right at Route 178, 4 miles to flashing
