Life Legacy


Vera Mae Brocklin, 101, of NYS Route 289, danced her way into heaven, Thursday morning in the Samaritan Keep Home, where she had been a resident since May of 2010.

Vera was born June 23, 1910, at Mathers Mills in the Town of Ellisburg, a daughter of Harley and Neva Downer. She attended Union Academy of Belleville and she married C. Grant VanBrocklin, in 1929 in Belleville. Grant a WWII veteran, died May 23rd 1946.

Survivors are a daughter, Neva Colwell of Florida; 10 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and 23 great great grandchildren.

She was predeceased along with her husband Grant, by her 2 sons, Charles and Richard, a grandson, Mark and her 2 sisters, Helen Jones and Rena Berry.

Vera managed the soda fountain at the Glasier Kinney store in Adams for many years and retired from Carrier Corp. in Syracuse.

She was a charter member of the Belleville Firemans Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the NYS Fiddlers Association, a member and former matron of the Belleville Eudora Chapter #136 OES, the new Watertown Senior Citizens Group, and the Adams American Legion Auxiliary.

Vera enjoyed dancing, gardening, walking, bird watching, and loved overlooking the Sandy Creek that ran behind her home. Another great love of her life was her great granddaughter Heidis son, Cohen James who always brought a smile to her face.

In keeping with her wishes, her body was donated to Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

A Memorial Service will be Monday, August 8th, at 11:00AM in the Belleville United Methodist Church. Arrangements are with the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home.
