Life Legacy


Lawrence E. Veley 84, of NYS Route 193, died Friday, September 3rd, in the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Pittsburg, PA. He was in Pittsburg attending the reunion of his group of Navy LST personnel from World War II.

He was born September 21, 1925, in the village of Ellisburg, a son of Rex O. and Mina Loomis Veley. He attended school in Ellisburg and was a graduate of the Union Academy of Belleville. He served on an LST landing ship #120 with the US Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

He married Dorothy E. Sidmore on October 12, 1946 in the Ellisburg Parsonage with Rev. Richard Grant officiating. He worked at F.E. Hudson and Son and also Roy K. Sidmore Oil Co. Lawrence and Dorothy purchased the Ellisburg Store and they operated it from 1955 to 1973 when they sold the business. He drove a bulk milk truck for his father and his brother part time hauling milk to the Dairylea Milk Plant. For the past 30 years he was a rural route mail carrier in the Ellisburg Woodville area. His wife Dorothy passed away August 21, 2005.

He was the Ellisburg fire chief for 14 years and a past president of the Jefferson Co. Fire Chiefs Association. He was mayor of the Village of Ellisburg for 5 years and also a trustee of the Village. He was a 60 year member of Rising Light Lodge #637 in Belleville, a member of the Ellisburg Methodist Church and the Ellisburg Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his son and his wife, Craig and Georgiena of Ellisburg; 2 grandchildren, Jon and his wife Sara of Centerville, VA, Jess and her husband Andrew Mohr of Memphis, NY; a great granddaughter Molly Veley; 2 brothers and their wives, Donald and Lucille of Mannsville, Aubrey and Dorene of Ellisburg; Lawrences companion, Lucille McNitt of Ellisburg; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 11:00AM Tuesday, September 7th, at the Carpenter-Stoodley funeral home, Belleville, with Mark Strader pastor of the Ellisburg Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Ellisburg Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Monday September 6th from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the funeral home.
