Anthony F. “Cooch” Verne

Anthony F. “Chooch” Verne, 77, of 667 Grant St., died Monday evening at his home.
Mr. Verne was a working foreman at the Borden’s Plant in Watertown for 30 years retiring when the plant closed in 1991.
He was born in Watertown, Dec 21, 1930, a son of Anthony and Jennie Monaco Verne. He attended Watertown High School, receiving an honorary diploma a few years ago from Watertown High School. Mr. Verne left school before graduation to work on the family farm. He served with the US Army from 1951 – 1953, serving his entire enlistment in Korea.
He married Patricia LaFountain October 16, 1954 in Chittenango. He was a past member of the North Side Improvement League. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, was an avid New York sports team fan and Syracuse sports fan.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony J. and Julie, Watertown. A daughter and her companion, Julie Verne and Michael Bennett, Watertown. 3 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren. 2 sisters, Rose Principle, Niagara Falls, Alice Gardner, Simpsonville, S.C. Several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joanne Scee, June 4, 2004. 3 brothers, Henry, Joseph and Robert, 3 sisters, Angie Ward, Arlene Toutant, and Rita Verne all predeceased him.
The funeral will be Friday 1pm at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Timothy Labouf, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday from 2p – 4pm and 7p – 9pm at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or to Public Health Nursing.
