Dorothy Bates

Dorothy Bates 89, formerly of Route 178, died Wednesday morning in the Samaritan Keep Home, where she had resided since April 26, 2001.

She was born May 27, 1918 in the Town of Ellisburg the daughter of Charles and Mary Golding, Dunham. She was a graduate of Henderson Central School and she married Burley Bates in the late 1940’s. Following their marriage they lived in the Butterville area, and Mr. Burley worked on local dairy farms.

They operated a dairy farm on Route 178 in the Town of Henderson for a while and then owned and operated a dairy farm in the 1960’s. Mrs. Bates suffered serious injuries in an auto accident in October of 1970, the accident in which her husband Burley was killed. In 1971 she moved to her home on Route 178.

She is survived by a son and his wife, William and Dorene Bates of Adams; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 6 step great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by 3 sisters, Frances Ramsdell, Florence VanAlstyne and Alice Frawley and a step great grandchild.

She was a member of The Adams United Methodist Church and the Henderson Central School Alumni Association.

The funeral service will be 2:00PM Friday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville with Rev. Mona Fargo, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Adams Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday 1:00 to 2:00PM, prior to the funeral.
