Madison 'Matt' Cobb The funeral service for Madison “Matt” Cobb, 85, of 11604 Rays Bay Road, will be a graveside service at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be Friday 6:00 to 8:00PM at the Carpenter-Stoodley funeral home, Belleville.

Mr. Cobb died Tuesday afternoon, at his home, following a lengthy ill, under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was born August 28, 1922 in Sandy Creek, a son of Hubert H. and Ethelwynn Lyons, Cobb. He attended Mannsville Manor Central School, and on November 7, 1942 joined the Army and was a member of the Army Ranger Unit the 2nd Ranger Infantry Battalion, Company F, that took Pointe du Hoc on the D Day battle of Normandy, the turning point of World War II. Among the medals he received, the Purple Heart is the one that put his name in “The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor”. The Hall of Honor recognizes any American wounded and/or killed in action, their story and what each person went through fighting for their country.

The book “Rangers in World War II” by Robert W. Black tells the true story of the Rangers during World War II and it lists every Ranger that fought during this time. Madison’s name is listed on page 367 in this book.

After his discharge, he married Arlean Reed March 1, 1947 in Ellisburg, he owned and operated his dairy farm, on Route 11 South of Adams for 14 years. He was manager of Northeast Feed Store in Pierrepont Manor for 10 years, and worked at Queens Farms Dairy, also in Pierrepont Manor, for 16 years until he retired 30 years ago due to a disability.

Surviving with his wife, Arlean; are 3 daughters, Sandra Hutchinson of Port Lyden, Susan Cobb of Sarasota, FL, and Sheila Cobb and her companion Dan Blount of Sandy Creek; 2 sons and their wives, Daniel and Leona of Adams Center, Madison D. and Kathy of Central Square; a sister and her husband, Ann and Stuart Sanderson of Adams; and a brother, David of Adams; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Hubert L. and John, and a sister, Helen Chatterton.

He was a member of Don Rounds American Legion Post #586 and the South Jefferson Memorial VFW Post 5344 both in Adams.

The family wishes to thank the Jefferson Co. Hospice for all their help given to Madison and Arlean, especially Ed, Kay, Robin and Bonnie. Also a special thanks to Mary and Daryl Forrester for all their help the past year, and to Gary Rhodes for his moral support and understanding given to Madison during his illness.
