Dorothy W. Matthews

Dorothy W. Matthews Dorothy W. Matthews 94, of 2968 County Route 121, died Saturday evening in the Lewis County Hospital Nursing Facility. She had been a resident there since June 15th.

She was born February 5, 1913 in Adams, the daughter of Stephen and Mabel Johnson, Weller. She graduated from the Union Academy of Belleville in 1931, and later from the Watertown Business School of Commerce. She was a bookkeeper at the C.D. Hudson & Sons Lumber and Block Company in Ellisburg.

She married Lucian E. Matthews May 14, 1936 in the Methodist parsonage, Dexter, with Rev. Paul Roy officiating. They lived on the Matthews family farm after their marriage. Mr. Matthews was elected Ellisburg Town supervisor in 1962, and she served as his bookkeeper while he was Town supervisor. Mr. Matthews died October 8, 1988.

Mrs. Matthews was a member and past treasurer of the Ellisburg United Methodist Church, the Willing Workers, a charter member of the Mr. and Mrs. Card Club in Ellisburg, a trustee of the Ellisburg Cemetery Association and a trustee of the Ellisburg Free Library. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, buying and selling antiques. The family would hold annual yard sales and auctions of the collectables.

She is survived by a son and his wife, James E. and Marilyn of Ellisburg; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Ardis I. Kohl and a granddaughter, Eileen Kohl.

The funeral service will be 1:00PM Wednesday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Burial will be in the Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours will be 3:00 to 7:00PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
