Helen J. Barney 79, of 2920 NYS Route 3, died Tuesday evening at University Hospital in Syracuse, she was admitted on November 6th.
She was born December 10, 1927 in Malone, the daughter of Earl and Myrtle Salls, Johnson. Her family moved to the Belleville area in 1930. She graduated from the Union Academy of Belleville in June of 1945. She married Richard C. “Bud” Barney November 10, 1946, at her parents’ home in Belleville, with Rev. Miles L. Hutchinson officiating.
She and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm on the Mixer Road, Belleville from 1954 until they retired and moved to their present home. Mr. Barney died January 11, 2006. Helen enjoyed baking, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a member of the Belleville United Methodist Church, worked on the Town of Ellisburg Board of Elections for 30 years, a girl scout leader, a 4-H leader, a member of Farm Bureau, a local group of women who met once a month called the Wemodausis Club,
And while at University Hospital she became a member of their Red Hat Society.
She is survived by 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Kenneth of Gaylesville, AL and Michael and Cindy of Belleville; 2 brothers, Earl Johnson and his companion Phyllis Kurtz of Fulton, and Keith Johnson of Langston, AL; a sister and her husband, Evelyn and Thomas Savage of Palermo; a sister-in-law and her husband, Elizabeth and Fred Millard of Woodville, and a sister-in-law, Cynthia Barney of Seminole, FL; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Claire Yeomans; a brother, Hugh Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Marshall Barney.
The funeral service will be 1:00PM Saturday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery, Belleville. Calling hours will be 5:00 to 8:00PM Friday and Noon to 1:00PM Saturday, at the funeral home.
