Virginia S. “Jinny” Overton

Virginia S. “Jinny” Overton, 86 of Rt 178, died Friday night at the Samaritan Medical Center. She had resided in the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home for the past 6 months.
Mrs. Overton was actively involved in the family business, Overton’s Farm Market, on Rt. 178 in Adams since it was founded in 1963 until the present day.
She was born, August 27, 1920 in “ The Huddle”, near Lorraine, a daughter of George and Olive Finley Sands. She graduated from Adams High School in 1936 and continued her education at the Syracuse Business School. She married F. Ralph Overton February 26, 1942. Mrs. Overton worked for several years at Wratten’s Insurance Co. in Adams. She owned and operated Overton’s Trailer Park on Rt. 178 from 1959 – 2002. Mr. Overton died in May of 1988.
Jinny loved gardening. Her favorite song was “Run for the Roses”and was part owner of a race horse for a period of time. Later in her life she was very involved with her grandchildren.
She is survived by 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Carole Newell, Glens Falls, Patricia and Peter Jones, Wilmington, NC. A son and daughter-in-law, Sandy and Elaine Overton, Watertown. 8 grandchildren, Mark (Melanie) Newell, Samantha (Jody) Moody, David (Nicole) Jones, Elizabeth (Joshua) Tootoo, Travis (Leslie) Overton, Stacie (Cory) Johnson, Carla Overton, and Katelynn Overton. 11 great grandchildren. A brother, G. Russell Sands, Antwerp. Several nieces and nephews. And a very special friend and neighbor, Mary Monica, Adams.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday for the convenience of the family in Elmwood Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Monday from 7p – 9pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home 2nd Floor Residents Fund.
