Stephen J. Cobb

Stephen J. Cobb, 61, of 5951 Machold Rd., died Wednesday evening at his home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Cobb operated the family dairy farm, Twin Springs Farm, on the Machold Rd. His father, John M., started the farm in 1943. The younger Mr. Cobb assumed sole operation of the farm when his father retired. The farm held the Dairy of Distinction designation through the New York State Beautification program from 1985 – 2001.
He was born, September 19, 1945, at the family homestead, in the same room where he passed away, a son of John M. and Bernice Prouty Cobb. He graduated from Union Academy of Belleville in 1963 and received an associates degree in mechanical engineering from Canton ATC. He married Nancy David, June 10, 1967.
Mr. Cobb was a member of the Belleville-Henderson Central School board from 1991 - 2006, serving as president for 2 years, vice president for 4 years and building committee chairperson for 1 year. He also served on the schools merger committee for a year, Jeff-Lewis School Board Association as secretary and treasurer for 4 years, and the Jeff-Lewis BOCES Board from 2005 – 06. At the state school board level, he served in various committees to include being the Area 5 representative, serving on the Everett Dyer Award Selection Committee for 3 years and the NYS School Boards Convention Voting delegate for one year.
He has served on the Town of Ellisburg Zoning board since 1984, the Ag Stabilization Conservation Service, Town chairperson for 10 years, FHA advisory board for 6 years, and the Farm Credit Advisory board for 20 years.
Mr. Cobb was active in youth groups to include Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts from 1980 until the present serving as Scout Master, unit commissioner, Order of the Arrow Brotherhood member and District Award of Merit. He was a T-Ball coach and president of the Adams Junior Bowling Assoc. from 1980-2004.
He was active in the local Woodville Maple Leaf 4-H club. He was their camping leader and served on the district Board of Directors, from 1990 – 1996. He was a Maple Sugar demonstrator at the Ag Extravaganza in Watertown from 1996 – 2004 and held maple syrup tours at his sugar bush for 10 years.
Mr. Cobb bowled in leagues since he was 18 and is a member of the Adams Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He taught Stained Glass for adult education at Jeff-Lewis BOCES and Belleville-Henderson Central School.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin J. and Deanna, Ellisburg. A daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Christopher Randall, Mannsville. 3 grandchildren, Colby and Caydin Randall, and John Cobb. A sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Sandy Overton, Watertown. Several nieces and nephews, 2 aunts and 2 uncles. His father John M., died on April 19, 1996.
The funeral will be Saturday 1pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville, with Rev. Sharon Satterlee, pastor of the Belleville United Methodist Church officiating. Spring burial will be in Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 2p – 4pm and 7p – 9pm at the funeral home.
